SEC Launches Probate Clinic to Help Investors Reclaim Unclaimed Assets
To address the persistent challenge of unclaimed dividends and dormant assets in Nigeria, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has launched a Probate/Unclaimed Monies Awareness and Investor Clinic in Abuja.
Organised alongside Meristem Registrars and Probate Services Limited, the initiative brings together the Federal Ministry of Justice, the Probate Registry, the National Population Commission, and capital market registrars to help beneficiaries successfully recover inherited financial assets.
Speaking at the launch, SEC Director-General Dr. Emomotimi Agama noted that many families struggle to access inherited shares and dividends due to documentation gaps and a lack of familiarity with estate administration procedures.
As a result, substantial funds belonging to everyday families remain disconnected and idle within the capital market following the death of loved ones.
Designed as a hands-on working clinic rather than a traditional information session, the programme offers practical guidance on navigating probate processes, securing necessary legal documentation, and claiming rightful inheritances.
Through this collaborative effort, the SEC aims to bridge the gap between legal entitlement and asset recovery, ultimately strengthening investor protection and restoring confidence across Nigeria’s capital market.
