African Startup Funding Tumbles 80% as Capital Shifts toward Debt Financing

News Aug 7, 2026 Ayodunvic

African startup funding experienced a sharp downturn in July 2026, with 47 companies securing $102.2 million in disclosed deals.

According to Nairametrics data, investment remained heavily concentrated, as the top 10 funded startups captured $88.85 million nearly 87% of all capital raised during the month.

Additionally, three startups closed merger and acquisition transactions with undisclosed terms, though these did not represent fresh capital inflows.

Despite this heavy concentration, capital was distributed slightly more broadly among smaller startups than in previous periods. Overall venture funding contracted significantly, plunging 80.2% compared to June 2026, when startups raised $515.6 million across 52 deals. Year-on-year figures reflected an even steeper decline of 81.6% from the $554.3 million secured across 71 deals in July 2025.

Across both comparison periods, the dominance of the top 10 deals moderated, dropping from over 94% in both June 2026 and July 2025 to around 86.6% in July 2026. Ultimately, while fresh capital became considerably scarcer across the continent, the limited pool of funds was spread somewhat more evenly across active startups than in prior months.
